Engineering quotes-Quotes from/about Engineers

Sometimes as engineers we can get caught up in the design and calculations for each project. It can be nice to take a break from the engineering side and look at some fun and interesting things people have said about engineers. Below are some of our favorite quote both from and about engineers.

“Math is my Passion. Engineering is my Profession. ”- Wilfred James Dolor. Our PE and owner can definitely get behind this one. He also says the math is his favorite part to do.

Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it. ”- Sir Henry Royce

“Projects we have completed demonstrate what we know - future projects decide what we will learn.”- Dr. Mohsin Tiwana. Here at ORB we have a plethora of completed projects that we have built our business on. We are always looking forward to innovate new designs for future structures!

“Engineering refers to the practice of organizing the design and construction [and, I would add operation] of any artifice which transforms the physical world around us to meet some recognized need.” - G.F.C. Rogers

“Engineers ... are not superhuman. They make mistakes in their assumptions, in their calculations, in their conclusions. That they make mistakes is forgivable; that they catch them is imperative. Thus it is the essence of modern engineering not only to be able to check one's own work but also to have one's work checked and to be able to check the work of others. ”- Henry Petroski. We can 100% agree with this one. Quality control, checking figures, and conferring with colleagues is crucial to the design process.

"Engineering or technology is the making of things that did not previously exist, whereas science is the discovering of things that have long existed." - David Billington

“The well being of the world largely depends upon the work of the engineer. There is a great future and unlimited scope for the profession; new works of all kinds are and will be required in every country, and for a young man of imagination and keenness I cannot conceive a more attractive profession. Imagination is necessary as well as scientific knowledge. ”- Sir William Halcrow. This is such a pleasant perspective. We love to consider that our engineers are not just designers but imaginers.

“The scientist discovers a new type of material or energy and the engineer discovers a new use for it.” - Gordon Lindsay Glegg. Or this science comparison: “Scientists study the world as it is, engineers create the world that never has been.” - Theodore von Karman. Of course, scientists are just as important as engineers.

“When engineers and quantity surveyors discuss aesthetics and architects study what cranes do we are on the right road.” - Ove Arup. While we don't know what the right road leads to, we can definitely agree that close coordination between architects and engineers is imperative to a good design!

And finally, one of our favorites: “To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be. " - Unknown

More to come soon.
